Meet Mona Chami
I walked into the 6th grade classroom one day morning, and they all turned to see who was at the door. They all stared, and the teacher greeted me with a "Good Morning!", one of the few words I understood in English. With all eyes still following me as I moved further into the room, I could notice some smiles showing on the students faces. I didn't know what that meant at first. "Why are they smiling at me? Do I have something on my face?" I moved with hesitation. Few minutes seemed like hours, and the teacher waiting for me by the board seemed to be standing miles away. "Please have a seat, Mona". I looked up at the teacher and tried to understand what she had just told me by looking at her hand gesture. She was pointing at an empty desk on the corner of the front row, I guessed she was leading me to my new desk. I was 11 at the time, and I had just arrived to Canada in the summer.
With a somewhat difficult integration and lots of hard work, I can now say I’ve made it. I am now a proud Lebanese-Canadian, fluent in English, French and Arabic, that has graduated with a double major in Education and Animation, as well as an Interior Decorating Diploma in hand. I have been a licensed teacher working for the Ontario French Public Board for few years now while being a patient mother to my sweet daughters Batoula, Rayhana and Yasmina (5,4 & 2 years old).
In taking this course, I am seeking a qualification that I never thought I’d try to have as well as take the challenge of teaching Senior English at the highschool where I am currently working. I am excited and especially eager to continue and complete this professional development chapter of my life.
Thank you for visiting my page and looking forward to all the learning ahead of us,
Mona Chami
